Dr. JOYCE M. MOCHERE’S BIOGRAPICAL NOTES
Joyce M. Mochere, is a lecturer at Kabarak University, School of Music and Media (SMM) since September 2016. She holds a PhD in Music Education from Kabarak University (Main Campus), Nakuru. She attained a Master’s degree in Music Education and a Bachelor of Education in Arts (Music and English/Literature) from Kenyatta University. She teaches Music theory, Music composition, History and Analysis of African and Western music, Church music, Aurals, and Music Practicals (Piano and Voice) at the department of Music and Performing Arts. She is Kabarak University’s internal auditor, a chairperson of the Innovation and Business Incubation, Innovation Capacity Building Training coordinator, and an innovation champion at Kabarak University, among other responsibilities.
Before joining Kabarak, she worked with Mount Kenya University (Thika, Kenya) in introducing and teaching music at Dadaab refugee camps in collaboration with the Association of Volunteers in International Service (AVSI). She was part of the Music Panel that wrote Music Teachers’ Guides for Form Three and Four on behalf of Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD). She is a Kenya Music Festival (KMF) adjudicator; Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) music examiner; a music composer of choral music, choir trainer and conductor. She represented Kenya in Italy, Fiuggi (September 1999) on the theme: ‘Europe, Asia, Africa- Women Making Music both Sacred and Profane’. She has a vast experience in teaching Music and English Literature at secondary school level where she has served as a leader in different capacities including the leadership of Christian Union. She is a Praise and Worship Leader in church. She has published nine articles and one book on ‘Music Instructional Methods and their Impact on Curriculum Implementation: A case of Selected Schools in Nairobi County (Kenya)’. Her research interests include: Curriculum development, Music pedagogy, African Music, and Church music.
